Why Durable Labels Fail—And How to Fix It

Durable labels are engineered to withstand tough environments—cold temperatures, moisture, chemicals, sunlight, abrasion, and handling. But even the strongest label will fail if the wrong material, adhesive, or construction is chosen for the job.

When labels fail, customers become frustrated and anxious. They worry about legal compliance, lost inventory, unreadable barcodes, failed inspections, and reputation damage.

For commercial printers and resellers, this is a huge opportunity to bring peace of mind. Below are the most common causes of durable label failure, the symptoms of failure, and how we can fix it:

1. Failure from UV Exposure, or Abrasion

Problem: Outdoor and industrial labels face a lot environmental adversaries, including the following:

  • Direct sunlight
  • High temperatures
  • Repeated handling
  • Friction and abrasion
  • Weather cycles

Over time, these conditions can result in fading, cracking, peeling, delamination, and smudging, all signs of failure due to incorrect face stock or insufficient UV/abrasion protection.

Solution: Choose the right combination of UV-resistant inks, polyester materials, and abrasion-resistant laminates. Not only will your labels stick, but as a reseller, you’ll increase your revenues since outdoor durable labels command premium pricing.

2. Failure from Cold, Moisture & Condensation

Problem: Cold-chain environments are one of the toughest conditions for labels. The most common culprits?

  • Walk-in coolers
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Cold warehouses
  • Craft beverage retail coolers
  • Wet production lines

Over time, these conditions can result in labels sliding off, edges curling, and labels falling off bottles or containers. Adhesive also becomes milky or weak. Cold temperatures + condensation + low-surface-energy plastics = loss of adhesion.

Solution: Use the right cold-temperature, moisture-resistant adhesive paired with the right synthetic facestock like BOPP or polyester.

3. Failure from Chemical Exposure

Problem: Industrial, automotive, lab, and chemical environments expose labels to:

  • Solvents
  • Cleaners
  • Oils
  • Fuels
  • Alcohols
  • Acids
  • Alkalis

What are the symptoms of label failure? Ink smearing or dissolving, laminate peeling, face stock degrading, and adhesive breaking down.

Solution: Use standard materials on chemical-exposed surfaces. Select the right chemical-resistant polyester or vinyl, solvent-resistant laminate and industrial-grade adhesive. Chemical exposure can be tricky, so it’s important to get it right. But when you do, chemical-resistant labels are high-value, repeat-order work.

4. Failure from Substrate or Packaging Changes

Problem: This is one of the most common and overlooked failure points. Your customer has an application that is working just fine. Then they make a switch. Suddenly, the old label doesn’t stick anymore. This is because new plastics, ink formulations, and coatings often have different surface energy, causing the adhesive to fail.

Among the most common switches customers make:

  • Container suppliers
  • Plastics
  • Colors
  • Resin formulations
  • Mold-release agents
  • Surface coatings

Symptoms of label failure include: peeling, bubbling, sliding, incomplete adhesion, and adhesive “beading.”

Solution: Select the right adhesives for the application, including LSE (Low Surface Energy) adhesives engineered for HDPE, PP, and other challenging substrates.

Packaging changes mean new label needs = new revenue.

5. Failure from Using the Wrong Adhesive

Problem: Most label failures trace back to adhesive selection, not the face stock. Common adhesive mistakes include:

  • General-purpose adhesives used for cold environments
  • Wrong adhesive for HDPE containers
  • Adhesives not suited for wet or oily surfaces
  • Adhesives that can’t handle extreme temperatures

Symptoms of adhesive failure include peeling, smearing, falling off, bubbling, label shifting, and partial bond.

Solution? Match the adhesive to the environment, surface, and expected lifespan.

6. Failure from the Wrong Material (Face Stock)

Problem: Durable labels are engineered for specific environments. Using the wrong material can lead to the following:

  • Tearing
  • Cracking
  • Fading
  • Chemical penetration
  • Moisture infiltration

The solution? Match the material to the use case:

  • Polyester → heat, chemicals, abrasion
  • BOPP → moisture, refrigeration, condensation
  • Vinyl → flexibility, curved surfaces
  • Synthetic paper → tear resistance + print quality

7. Failure from Improper Finishing or Lamination

Problem: Durable labels often require protective layers. If the laminate is missing—or not the right kind—labels fail. Your customer might see . . .

  • Abrasion during handling
  • Rubbing off during shipping
  • Fading from UV exposure
  • Chemical penetration

Solution: Use a laminate matched to the environment: There are many types of laminates, including gloss or matte,  UV-resistant; abrasion-resistant; and chemical-resistant. We’ll help you choose the right one!

8. Failure from Mismatched Lifespan Requirements

Problem: A label built for 90 days will fail if the product needs five years of durability. Customers often purchase labels designed for the type of application, but not necessarily for the length of time the label will need to be adhered.

Always ask: “How long does this label need to last?”

When labels fail, customers start asking questions. Very often, they will switch vendors (or be open to switching vendors), so take advantage of the opportunity when it arises.  Remember that you don’t need to be the expert. That’s what we’re for! Examples of Third-Party Testing Criteria

The following testing criteria give you and your customer the opportunity to identify if the testing requirement meet the needs of the label application.

UL 969 requires:

  • 750 hrs UV weathering
  • –40°C to 150°C environmental exposure
  • 240 hrs humidity
  • 24 hrs water soak
  • Solvent wipes (IPA + heptane)
  • Abrasion rub test
  • Adhesion before & after all conditioning

BS 5609 requires:

    • 30 days saltwater immersion
    • 90 days marine weathering (UV + abrasion + salt spray)
    • Adhesion to HDPE must survive all conditioning
  • Print must remain permanently legible
